Under Consumer Protection Law No. 6502, consumer disputes below a certain value must be brought before a consumer arbitration committee. The threshold is revalued and announced by the Ministry of Trade every year.
Why it matters
Filing directly with a consumer court for a dispute below the threshold leads to dismissal on procedural grounds. For disputes above the threshold, mediation is a precondition before filing with the consumer court.
The threshold in force on the application date applies, so the annual update at the start of the year must be followed.
Our advice
Before applying, calculate the claim including any interest and costs, and check the threshold announced by the Ministry for that year. Committee decisions can be challenged before the consumer court.
